Look how far we’ve come…

I remember back in the day we would spend day, hours, sometimes weeks getting our shell scripts working the way we wanted.

Then you would take that file and use it everywhere. Of course this lead to issues when you wanted to update it, but rcs, sccs, and ultimately git solved those issues.

These days I’ve given up running a linux vm on my windows desktop in favor of WSL. It’s pretty lean and does what I need it to do without much fuss. That’s the big difference: in the past I would waste countless hours to think I was cool. Sure I learned a lot about various systems but ultimately it was a waste of time.

I’m not judging wasting time, believe me, I’ve done a lot of it and will likely continue to do so :). I don’t want this post to turn into a metaphysical discussion of how time cannot be wasted but…

So back to the matter at hand, prompts…

Back in the day if you had something like:

[email protected] /home/asp/betattat>

You were pretty cool.

Now prompts look like this:

Holy crap! And something like that took about 10 minutes to setup. Granted I’m sure it took the author of p10k a lot of time to create but damn man pretty cool.

If you are looking for a zsh theme that can do it all and quickly please give p10k a spin!
