So this is a funny one:
I was in the process of obsessing about cover art and finding a way to use anything other than i(not)Tunes. Some people were raving about Winamp with the media library plugin (comes with the full install).
So I downloaded installed and was instantly impressed. Few things that were missing was an easy way to download all of the cover art, but there are other programs that do this, and in fairness to Winamp it will do it for you to but you have to right-click on the album or set of albums and blah blah.
After spending awhile getting all of the album art together I realized that Winamp expects to see the art file by a certain name in this case it was %(album) as it is defined in the id3 tag. Maybe all of this shit is configurable but I couldn’t find the place for it.
Once I got all of it sorted out I went back into winamp and the files could be played but I couldn’t hear anything. I was like WTF? This same thing happened to me with iTunes after an upgrade, but the difference was the file wouldn’t even play with iTunes and yet it could be played in other players no problem.
I was scratching my head look at the volume control properties main volume-check. Speakers on-check. Speakers blasting-check. I did nothing to stop sound from coming out of the speakers but yet it sure wasn’t working.
Well lets delete the sound card. Seems to be a way to fix things with windows. Nope. Fuck. OK lets create another user and see if it happens to them too. Yep. Shit. Back to my user account launch the sound control again main volume check. Wav is not turned all the way down but it is low and while I had a song playing I turned it up loud and say mother F***ER.
There was sound.
I looked at the main control of winamp and the volume was turned all the way down.
I don’t blame myself totally for this since I never turned the volume down to begin with and it was working before but what a total pain in the ass.
Total Time Spent: 30 minutes and one reboot
