Comcast Business

It has been a few days since the business service has been installed and now I have figured pretty much everything out.

First the installer never mentioned to me that the SMC8014 that he installed was manageable. I knew that I would have to download a manual and figure it out but hadn’t gotten around to it yet.

Anyway sometime Friday night I was logged into to my VM in Atlanta. I got disconnected and couldn’t reconnect. I couldn’t get to my website either. Weird. Accessed it through the console and all was well…What the hell?

I found a couple of docs on the SMC8014

http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?event=viewProduct&localeCode=EN_USA&cid=2&scid=20&pid=1611

The other was an article on the default username and password for these devices as configured by comcast. Here are the defaults:

IP: 10.1.10.1
Username: cusadmin
Password: highspeed

Do yourself a favor and change the password as soon as possible.

So the 8014 is a 4-port firewall/router (I hate calling these things routers). It has and a DHCP server which is configured by default to serve addresses from 10.1.10.20 -> 10.1.10.199. Uhh how about twenty or twenty-five addresses?

So the big problem for me is that I already have a firewall and having the firewall on this device was just causing me problems. Luckily there is a checkbox to shut the firewall off. Once I did this the problems went away.

The box also allows for NAT/Port forwarding and the like but I will have to change things around on my network in order to get this to work. For now, I couldn’t care less as I don’t generally have the need to get back into my network at home from the outside.

Anyway hope this helps someone…
